Knitting calculators

We've built two knitting calculators: a decrease calculator and an increase calculator.

These tools help with pattern instructions like "decrease 8 stitches evenly across the row." They automatically calculate where to place the increases or decreases so that they're evenly distributed across the row, while avoiding row ends so as not to mess up the edges.

The results are given as both written instructions and as a chart, so you can use whichever you prefer. The increase calculator also takes into account the type of increase you're doing.

If you have any issues or feedback about the tools, please let us know.

Newly-published books

For the first time since I started including books in the newsletter, I couldn't find any new knitting or crochet books published last month. So I've decided to stretch my normal rules about what counts as new, and what counts as a knitting book.

[Book: 'Crochet Granny Squares and More' by Laura Strutt]

Crochet Granny Squares and More by Laura Strutt was first published in 2015, under the title Modern Granny Square Crochet and More. The publishers re-released it last month, with a new name and a new cover. If you're a fan of the classic granny crochet look, then I think there are some nice patterns in the book.

[Book: 'Catside Up, Catside Down' by Anna Hrachovec]

The second book is not really a knitting book at all, but it does include funny knitted cats, which I hope makes it acceptable. Catside Up, Catside Down is a children's book that shows knitted cats in unlikely positions, the aim being to entertain children while they learn various preposition words like up, down, on and under.

While there are no knitting patterns in the book, author Anna Hrachovec does have cat knitting patterns available on Ravelry. I think a handmade cat along with the book would make a cute gift for a small person.

And just in case you were worried, there are plenty of new knitting and crochet books coming out in February!
