[Book: 'All You Knit Is Love' by Caroline Smith]

If you are a knitter of a certain age, then prepare yourself for a blast from the past with the official Beatles knitting book, All You Knit Is Love.

The 27 designs in the book include a Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club sweater, a Yellow Submarine baby onesie, and the Rubber Soul Pillow, which I think perfectly captures the iconic logo.

1. A young man in a turquoise jumper with
Designs from All You Knit Is Love, by Caroline Smith

The book's not aimed at beginners, as there are no basic knitting instructions and author Caroline Smith classifies most of the patterns as for intermediate or advanced knitters. I reckon there's a lot to love about these patterns if you're a Beatles fan though, so they might be worth the challenge.

[Book: 'Every Way With Granny Crochet' by Julia Madill]

In Every Way With Granny Crochet, Julia Madill shows us that granny stitch doesn't have to be square. The book includes patterns for granny stitch in nearly every shape you can think of, including parallelogram, arch, teardrop and even egg.

Crocheted shapes made in granny stitch: a multicolored parallelogram, a rainbow arch, a pale blue teardorp and a white egg-shape with a yellow center.
Shapes from Every Way With Granny Crochet, by Julia Madill

There's only one project pattern included—a sampler blanket using different shapes from the book. You could tessellate any number of the shape combinations though. I like the idea of hexagons and triangles, or parallelograms and six-pointed stars, like the examples I've come up with below.

1. Tessellated hexagons in shades of blue and gray, with pale gray triangles in the gaps between hexagons. 2. Purple, green, white and pale blue 6-pointed stars tessellated with pale gray parallelograms.

As well as being ideal for fans of granny stitch, I think this book might be a good choice if you want to get a solid foundation in crochet skills. The basics of crochet are explained with clear language and pictures, as you'd hope from any book written with beginners in mind. But unlike many other crochet books, Every Way With Granny Crochet is also full of ways to improve your crochet skills further.

For example, Julia explains how (and when) to use faux stitches or standing stitches instead of chains as a first stitch of a round. She includes four different ways to make a basic granny square, along with advice on when to use them. She explains how to read a crochet chart, gives five ways to join crochet shapes, and even four ways to crochet into a starting chain.

When you have this breadth of skills, it gives you options to solve any problems that crop up in your crochet. And you get to make a fabulous granny stitch blanket as you learn.
