[Book: 'Knit Bits: Learn To Knit Shaping' by Knit Picks Design Team]

Knit Bits: Learn To Knit Shaping is a straightforward guide aimed at novice knitters who want to take the next step after mastering knit and purl.

As well as increases and decreases, the book covers useful techniques like short rows, picking up stitches, and the magic loop method for working in the round.

The book contains three simple patterns: a hat, fingerless mittens and a pair of slipper socks.

Learn To Knit Shaping is one of multiple Knit Bits books from Knit Picks, all aimed at helping knitters improve their skills one technique at a time.

[Book: 'Corners and Curves' by Shelley Husband]

Corners and Curves is a book of granny squares that all start as circles and end up square.

The book includes 45 different squares in three sizes, plus 11 patterns to make with them. The patterns include blankets, a scarf, a cowl and a cosy-looking wrap.

What I appreciate about Shelley Husband's approach is her attention to detail. Each square has both charts and written instructions, as well as samples in three or four different color combinations. Shelley has also included a page of links to useful extras, such as a printable version of the glossary. It's a nice touch that means you can avoid having to flick backwards and forwards between the patterns and glossary while you're crocheting.

One thing to note is that the book isn't for complete beginners. Shelley doesn't include tutorials for the basics. She does have photo tutorials for some of the more unusual techniques, like how to create a seamless transition between rounds when crocheting. She also includes links to her technique videos on YouTube. But if you want a more structured approach to learning the basics, Shelley recommends her beginner's book Granny Square Academy.
