Newly-published books

If you know basic crochet but don't think of yourself as a "crocheter", then I think after following Granny Square Academy 2 you will.

The book includes a wide range of techniques, along with the kind of expert tips that normally take years to acquire. The techniques covered include standing stitches, working into different parts of the stitch, spike stitches, popcorn stitch, and invisible joins. And while Granny Square Academy 2 doesn't include the basics—since it picks up where Granny Square Academy leaves off—Shelley Husband does recap some tricky essentials, like how to start a granny square with a magic circle, how to finish each round and how to join the squares together.

The book goes beyond providing technique tutorials though. Shelley also discusses why she's chosen one technique over another, and what to do about general problems, like not being able to match a designer's gauge, and why it's harder to match gauge in crochet than in knitting. It's great if you like to geek out and really understand what's going on with your crochet.

The book includes lots of help that will allow you to practice the new techniques. Each chapter includes a pattern for a granny square, along with comprehensive photo tutorials. There's also a video link for each granny square, and a mirrored version of the video for left-handed crocheters. The pattern itself is provided twice—once in US terms and once in UK terms. While I'm guessing it's easier to publish just one book instead of a separate one for each set of terms, the minor downside is that every reader ends up having to skip over pattern pages that aren't relevant to them.

I think the structure of the book will help you stay motivated right to the end. The learning path is clear and achievable. Since granny squares are small projects, there are regular "wins" along the way. And at the end you not only get a finished blanket, but also the satisfaction of really starting to think of yourself as a crocheter.
