[Book: 'Fair Isle Knitting' by Carina Olsson]

Fair Isle Knitting is a book not only for Fair Isle fans but also for people who would like to learn a way to choose colors that work well together.

Carina Olsson came up with a process for choosing colors when she found that her usual color palette was too limited for Fair Isle designs.

The main thrust of her process, that she shares in the book, involves taking photographs to capture color combinations that she likes in everyday life. She then finds yarns that match the colors in the picture. While she might capture these "color memories" in any setting, Carina says that one of her favorite places for finding color combinations is at the beach.

Pebbles on a beach in shades of blue, pink and gray, with some pink and green seaweeds. Yarns matching the different colors have been attached to a white card.

She goes on to talk about how to use the new color combinations in ways that work well for Fair Isle designs specifically, but I think any knitter or crocheter might benefit from the first part of the process—taking time to notice and record the colors that you like.

In addition to her ideas on choosing colors, there is plenty more in the book for Fair Isle fans. Carina has included a selection of traditional Fair Isle pattern motifs, in case you want to mix and match to make your own. And if you just want to knit, there are 22 patterns for sweaters, gloves, mittens, cowls, hats and project bags. You don't even have to work out your own colorways if you don't want to!

1. A woman in a blue woolen jumper wears gloves and a matching cowl, which have a dark brown background with stripes of orange and blue Fair Isle patterning. 2. A woman in a blue jumper carries a child wearing a Fair Isle patterned jumper in shades of blue, black, gray, white and yellow. 3. Three different zipped bags, each made from different and intricate Fair Isle patterns.
