The attention to detail in Natasha Tishchenko's designs makes her Aquatic Amigurumi creations a little bit special, I think. There's no crochet left plain if adding a ruffle or some embroidery would make it look more polished.
Of course, adding these extra details take time, and that might be off-putting for some people. So I respect that she's not worrying about that, but has produced the designs that she likes.
If you do think these designs are worth the effort involved, Natasha Tishchenko has taken care to make them reproducible. As well as tutorials and links to videos for all the basic crochet stitches, she has included many photos showing exactly where to insert your hook or embroidery needle in order to achieve the look of the toys in the book.
So don't think that just because they look so professional, that makes them beyond you. In fact, there's so much help included, they might even make a brilliant first amigurumi project!
Stranded knitting is most often used to produce repeating patterns around an entire garment, as in traditional Fair-isle or Nordic-style knitting. In Wild Mittens Unruly Socks 3, Lumi Karmitsa uses stranded knitting to make pictures instead—something you're more likely to expect from an intarsia design. The result can be more subtle than intarsia though, since you can easily inter-mix the colors when you're stranding, as seen in the mittens below, in the girl's hair and dress and the pathway.
The patterns in the book depict a range of subjects, from cute kittens and baby deer to a slightly freaky frog and a very creepy clown—not one for anyone with a clown phobia! (I'm not a sufferer, but I can totally understand why it's a thing.) Below are some of the friendlier-looking designs.
I wouldn't say that this is a book aimed at complete beginners. There are only basic tutorials included for stranded knitting, though there are tips for making it look good, such as how to steam block your finished work.
Creepy clowns aside, I would love to make many of the designs in the book. There's not much in knitting that I find more motivating than watching a picture grow beneath my needles.
How do you squeeze patterns for 10,000 Knitted Hats into a book that's only 80 pages long? Jo Allport's trick was to write patterns for 23 hats, and then allow you to mix and match any brim, body and crown for a total of 23 x 23 x 23 = more than 12,000 different hat combinations! The pages of the book are literally cut into 3, and the book is spiral bound, so you just flip the different page-parts around until you get a hat that you like the look of. I think that might be quite fun in itself, even if I never knit a stitch of an actual hat!
When I say 12,000 "different" combinations, some of these hats are going to have the same brim and body with just a slightly amended crown, so I'm glad that Jo Allport has knocked a couple of thousand off her claim for the book title! Still, even one thousand different hats would be more than enough for the average knitter.
All the hats are knitted in a DK-weight yarn, so the book would be great for anyone who has DK yarn to use up in their stash. Or perhaps for someone who wants plenty of options for gift knitting. You could even use this book to get a head start on your Christmas knitting!
