[Book: 'A Knitter's Guide To Shawl Design' by Emma Vining]

If you want to come up with your own designs, shawls can be a great first project. Shawls don't need to fit precisely, so you can worry less about sizing and instead focus on the fun stuff like deciding the shape, stitch patterns and colors you'd like.

If you're still not sure that you have the skills to come up with your own designs, A Knitter's Guide To Shawl Design might help. Emma Vining explains her design process from how to find inspiration, to the specific techniques that you'll need to make shawls of different shapes. She has also included five finished shawls as case studies of her design process, complete with pattern instructions. But instead of knitting Emma Vining's patterns, personally I hope the book gives you the confidence to try making your own designs instead.

[Book: 'Crocheted Bees, Bugs & Butterflies' by Vanessa Mooncie]

The secret to shaping these amazing Crocheted Bees, Bugs & Butterflies lies in their internal wire armature. I wonder if it's straighforward to recreate them as perfectly as the ones on the cover or whether you need a lot of practice to pull that off? Either way, I think it would be fun to try.

If you framed them, I reckon these crocheted insects would be just as intriguing as real insects pinned inside a frame—but less gruesome!

[Book: 'Knitting the National Parks' by Nancy Bates]

If you have fond memories of visiting Yosemite or Yellowstone (or any other of America's National Parks) then you might enjoy reminiscing while making a hat from Knitting the National Parks. The book includes 63 hat designs, each inspired by one of the National Parks. And if there's a Park that you've never been to but wish you had, then maybe you can dream up travel plans as you knit!

4 hats inspired by 4 of National Parks
Hats by Nancy Bates, inspired by Redwood, Great Smoky Mountains, Denali & Wrangell-St Elias National Parks
