Newly-published books

The thing that impresses me most about Colorful Crochet Knitwear isn't the designs, as much as I like them. It isn't the technique tutorials, as helpful as I found them.

It's a double page spread in which Sandra Gutierrez explains five different tapestry crochet swatches. Each swatch follows the same color chart but uses a different variation of the single crochet stitch (double crochet, in UK terms). Gutierrez explains the pros and cons of each variation. She says which she prefers but gives readers all the information they need to make a different choice if they want to.

These pages left me with the impression that Gutierrez thinks carefully about what she's doing. And since making a sweater takes a significant investment in time and money, I like the idea of putting my investment in the hands of a thoughtful designer!

The book isn't aimed at complete beginners, in that she doesn't explain the basics, but I think it would be great for anyone interested in learning more about crochet colorwork techniques and anyone who thinks crochet is only good for making toys and blankets!
