[Book: 'Icelandic Mittens' by Guðrún Hannele Henttinen]

Icelandic Mittens contains 25 patterns based on mittens displayed at a textiles museum in Iceland. Each pattern includes a photo of the original mittens alongside the new version.

The book also explains some of the history of Icelandic knitting. Apparently, knitted goods were an important Icelandic export in the 18th and 19th centuries. A farm-woman was expected to make a pair of socks or mittens every day to supplement the family income. This blows my mind, since I recently made a pair of mittens and it took me a month!

Most of the patterns in the book use stranded knitting, while a few use lace. The author says there are patterns that are suitable for both advanced knitters and beginners.

The idea of knitting a piece of Icelandic history appeals to me—so long as nobody is expecting me to finish in a day!
