Newly-published books

[Book: 'The Colorwork Bible' by Jesie Ostermiller] [Book: 'Crochet Iconic Women' by Carla Mitrani] [Book: 'Operation Sock Drawer' by Knitmore Girls]

I didn't think I had any more to learn about something as basic as knitting stripes, but I should have remembered it pays to be humble when it comes to knitting knowledge. Until now, I've always worked an even number of rows in each stripe when I'm knitting back and forth. That way, when I finish a stripe in one color, I'm back in the right place to pick up a color from a previous stripe without having to cut the yarn. In The Colorwork Bible, Jesie Ostermiller points out that if you're using a circular needle, you can work any number of rows you like. Any time your next color is hanging at the opposite side of the work, just shift all the stitches along to the opposite end of the needle, where your next yarn is ready and waiting. Brilliant! As well as stripes, Ostermiller covers stranded knitting, mosaic, intarsia, double knitting and brioche. Maybe this book could provide some "Aha!" moments for you too.

If you're looking for an unusual and thoughtful gift for a child, how about making a doll from Crochet Iconic Women and including a short history of the person along with the doll? With women like Rosa Parks, Amelia Earhart and Malala Yousafzai to choose from, you might end up inspiring a future pioneer!

It surprises me how great an urge I feel to fill a drawer with handmade socks when I see the cover of Operation Sock Drawer. Since I hardly ever wear socks, why on earth am I considering knitting myself a whole drawerful? Because I can't stop imagining how I would feel opening up that sock drawer and seeing all those jolts of color in perfect tidy rows, my pride at having brought them into the world through my own skill and persistence, and more than that, how each pair would spark memories about what was going on in my life as I was knitting it— where I was, who I was with, which box-set I was watching at the time. That's a lot of nostalgia from just opening a drawer.

But what about the unfortunate fact that I don't wear socks? New plan—Operation Sweater Drawer!
