Newly-published books

[Book: 'Cuddly Crochet Critters' by Megan Kreiner] [Book: 'Big Book of Christmas Knits' by Jorid Linvik] [Book: 'This Golden Fleece' by Esther Rutter]

I was initially tricked by the pictures on the cover of Cuddly Crochet Critters. I assumed that the book contained patterns for cute little toys. But then I realized they're made with super bulky chenille yarn, and therefore much bigger than I first thought, so they double up as cute pillows as well! I have to say the last time I used chenille I found it such hard work that I swore I wouldn't bother again. I've since found out that chenille is directional, so as you work with it you can be either smoothing or ruffling the yarn, and it's much easier if you're smoothing. I must have been ruffling it when I tried it before. Perhaps a Cuddly Critter will tempt me to give it another go.

I know we've only just entered September, but if you are thinking about making gifts for Christmas, now would be a good time to start. I mean, imagine how relaxing it would be if you were to finish the last gift with time to spare—say, 6pm on Christmas Eve? And since you can't go too far wrong with a Nordic design for the festive season, Jorid Linvik has released a Big Book of Christmas Knits at the perfect time. It's almost like she planned it.

This week I went with some friends to an evening with Esther Rutter on her book tour for This Golden Fleece. I'll be honest, I was mostly looking forward to the chance to spend the evening knitting with my friends, but, as it turned out, I found the book (and Esther's reading of it) delightful, and worth an evening away from the sofa in its own right. Esther knitted her way around the British Isles, with the aim of researching and knitting one traditional regional pattern each month for a year. The book is full of interesting stories, and I'm looking forward to reading more of it.

This Golden Fleece is out already in the UK and is available for pre-order in the US.
